Influence of games on human development

I have always watched with horror modern children sitting with tablets in their hands. An indifferent expression on his face and, as if paralyzed, an unnatural posture inspired thoughts that this creature sitting in front of me is not at all capable of reflection. More than once I had to watch the scene when the mother, irritated by the excessive activity of the child, solemnly presented her child with a tablet or smartphone. Having analyzed the behavioral characteristics of modern children (and young people in general), I came to conclusions that are frightening for the imagination. In my mind, the situation that I am observing seems to me extremely dangerous for immature minds. Comparing the current generation with mine, which, it would seem, is far from old, I began to doubt the so-called technological progress.

In this article, I will reflect on the topic of a happy childhood, so that you, game lovers (future parents of your hypothetical children), after analyzing my example, reconsider your views on computer games and provide your child with a wonderful future.

I will briefly tell you about my gaming experience, and how this experience influenced me.

Like everyone else, I was a very curious and positive child. In those days, far from reality, the colors seemed brighter, the air was cleaner, the food tasted better. Games for us, for children of “those” times, were a kind of image of adulthood. And I, like any other child, imitated adults in every possible way.

In my humble life, there were quite a few interesting games that I played, but the following were especially memorable:

Game number 1 (for honor and courage)

In early childhood, I lived in the countryside. This is a wonderful and extremely dangerous place for a child. At the time, the TV was convex and colorless. An antenna hanging crookedly from a wooden pole received only two federal channels, unremarkable for a child. We entertained ourselves in a very archaic way. With the help of a stick, like a witch’s sword, we cleared the thickets of nettles in the gardens. Huge burdocks were bosses, since their stems were thicker (it took a lot of effort to chop them with a stick). Nettle scalded with boiling water, thorns clung to socks and pricked our feet, but we brave children never retreated.

Game number 2 (imagination)

After a while, my parents, nevertheless, were able to align the antenna, and since that time in my mind, like mold, mass culture began to spread. It all started with Hercules, or with Xena, I don’t remember exactly, but the image of “Robocop” seems to me very clearly. Surely, as a villager, everything came to me very late, especially the elements of mass culture, but, in essence, this did not change anything. After watching the movie, they bought me a smelly (literally) plastic Robocop toy, and I was in eighth heaven. Playing with Robocop, I could imagine any storyline and build the appropriate locations with the help of the trash at hand. The great thing was that Robocop’s hand could be replaced with a flamethrower and I did it with an unnatural frequency. At some point, the robot’s arm just fell off, and my grandfather attached it back with a hot nail on a gas stove. I was very upset when I saw Frankenstein instead of Robocop. However, it was a full-fledged gaming experience, and remembering it now, I understand that it (the gaming experience), in part, influenced my life.

Game number 3 (fighting passion)

Somewhere in the early 2000s, seditious monsters burst into our country with a crazy roar – P O K E M O N S. I have no idea how it happened, maybe it’s conspiracy, but they literally hypnotized me. It got to the point that I recorded the introductory music from the cartoon on a cassette and listened to it on the player at school during recess (some kind of shame). But at that time everyone was dragging away from Pokémon (let that be an excuse for me). The nightmare was that the Pokémon were shown in the evening at the same time as the idiotic news, and the angry grandfather often chased me off the screen. Sometimes it came to tears. Later, the cartoon ceased to be broadcast on television altogether, but there was plenty of content from the universe of enchanting monsters. Stickers and chips …

If I pasted the stickers and forgot, then the chips in our time were the equivalent of everything. Children of that time treated chips in much the same way that prisoners treated tobacco. Everyone knows this game. On one day you could multiply your wealth several times, on the other day you could lose everything. As a rule, the one who played the least had the chips (this is about the same as now happens to people who trade securities on the stock market). That period of my life became a lesson for me, and now I practically do not succumb to excitement and try to value the acquired property.

Game number 4 (the moment when something went wrong)

What happened later was just incredible for me at that time. Eight-bit consoles appeared on the market. And after my many days of obsessive whining, my parents still bought me this car to pump out the tears of schoolchildren. In a literal sense, this simple box, connected to an old Soviet convex TV set, was crushing my nerve cells to pieces. I wrote about this in the last article. And I think it is worth noting the life experience that I got playing on the ill-fated famous console, whose name is “Dandy”.

I want to mention the game Battletoads. At certain levels, the game becomes so difficult that you have to memorize all the micro-movements of the elements in the game, and for this you have to constantly die and start the game over. It is much easier and safer for a student to learn the multiplication table. I remember that I never mastered the first part, but I mastered the second part, with more gentle gameplay. It also happened that while playing such games, I broke the joystick out of anger. It even got to the point that the parents, watching our game with friends on the console and our inappropriate behavior, tore our power supplies. This is how steel is tempered …

Game number 5 (oh brave flat world)

If my memory serves me, I was in the 6th grade when my parents offered me to buy a computer. The degree of my ignorance in those years reached such a huge number that I was literally ready to give up the computer in favor of the “Dandy” prefix. All this happened because I did not even suspect that it would be possible to play on the computer. Being a person so out of touch with reality, I, nevertheless, got my own computer on which, as it turned out, you can not only play games, but also listen to the O-Zone song simultaneously with the game (this is the one that is numbered). Games of that time already looked pretty decent, they became 3D, although we must admit that the aesthetics of 2D games are also quite attractive. I would like to mention the following games of those times: Worms, Quake, Half-Life, Diablo, Heroes of might and magic 3, Warcraft 3. All of these games stood out either for their plot or gameplay. However, the most attractive feature of these games was their inaccessibility. It was necessary to strain to find a disc with a game or a hard drive (there was no Internet at that time). That is, in addition to the in-game quest, there was an external quest. In my case, it is to find a friend with games on the hard drive, quietly from the parents to open the computer case and insert someone else’s hard drive with viruses there (it was a shock for parents to see such a thing, especially when Kaspersky’s antivirus made the most terrible sound of a screeching pig in the whole world ). All these events, taken together, created one complete game for me. But the world changed when I found out about this unfortunate map – Dota Allstars. Game number 6 (eternal self-deception)

If we face the truth, then it becomes obvious that all these games (with the exception of the war with nettles and games with the robot) do not carry any special value in themselves. In fact, this activity is an incredibly waste of time. Parents, instead of investing their own time in the development of the child, simply spend money on a thing that is harmful to the child’s health. The unhappy child, in turn, instead of spending time with his parents, or instead of a banal reading of the conventional Mark Twain, sits with meaningless eyes and looks into flat nothingness.

I have to admit that I was the same child. For me, the map in Warcraft 3 was more real; my alter ego at that time was “Mecca” and “Vladimir” Mippo farming in the forest (yes, that was how Mippo was equipped in those days). In those days, everything else that did not concern the game seemed pointless to me (I was dead inside when it was not yet mainstream). Thousands of hours have been wasted. And later the Internet appeared (so this is generally an abyss). Playing DotA has become such a routine that I don’t remember anything from that time. Seriously, I don’t remember a single map from those times and I can’t boast of any achievements. Later I asked myself: why do I remember the moments in my life when I beat nettles, played with a robot, exchanged cartridges with friends, played on the same keyboard with my brother “Bomberman”, but don’t remember a single skating rink in the pillbox? The answer is banal: because movement (interaction with the external) has gone from the game and life has become a routine.

And looking at the children who are hunched over, with a tablet in their hands, sitting on a stool somewhere in a burger shop, and playing some kind of modern senseless game where you have to cut watermelons with your finger, I involuntarily recall the lost myself. But I was lucky, at some point I recovered, I rethought my approach to life. I continue to play Dota, but I do it much less often (not to the detriment of my health and personal development, as before). As for the children who have been holding a tablet or smartphone from the beginning, I just feel sorry for them. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems to me that their childhood is incredibly dull.

This article is a stream of consciousness. I made a conclusion for myself. If I have a child, then I definitely won’t buy him a tablet until a certain age. And when I buy, I will definitely install software that will block anime content, explicit cosplays and rap. Draw your own conclusions.
